No New Posts Week 8

We have made it to the finish line! Yes, perhaps we have lost some comrades along the way, but that's OK. Whether you have wrote for the entirety of the 8 weeks, only posted for 1, or didn't participate at all... Week 8 is designed for us all to end on a strong note.

What we want you to do for the final week is go back through weeks 1-7, and pick someone else's poem/prose/short story that spoke to you the most. Then, write your piece based on the inspiration you took from a fellow writers work. This week, there are no rules. You can write a poem, a short story, or one long run on sentence. All we ask is that at the bottom of the post, give credit to the author and the title of the post that inspired you.

No New Posts Week 7: Field Trip

At some point during this writing challenge we ask you to change your perspective a bit. Sometimes we suggest going outside, or writing from a different place (like in your car or in the laundry room) This week, we want you to write from another place on the planet.

But where do I go? You ask. And how do I get there?

Below you will find a link to a website. Under the picture of the map is a button labeled "PICK COORDINATES". This will randomly generate a pin any place on the globe.

We want you to write from that place.

For example: Your pin placed you in the middle of the ocean. Write about what it must feel like to be in the middle of the ocean. Or the bottom of the ocean.

Or

Your pin placed you in Russia. Maybe write about cold bleak winters. Or the cold war. Or even Russian nesting dolls.

No New Posts Week 6: Ruba'i/ rubaiyat

Welcome to week 6. There has been some talk about rhyming. Does rhyming necessarily make a poem better? This week we want to add some structure to your poems. So let's all get our groans out right now. All done? Ok. Let's write a ruba'i for this glorious week 6.

But what is a ruba'i? it’s a Persian form — multiple stanzas in the ruba’i form are a rubaiyat. Basically, a ruba’i is a four-line stanza, with a rhyme scheme of AABA.

For example-

STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING
by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

No New Posts Week 5: Rorschach test

Ok. 4 weeks behind us, let's start off week 5 with something a little different. We all view the same exact world in very different ways. This week, let's prove it. Below you will find a link to a Rorschach test. What do you see? Write about it.

Congrats, we have all made it to the halfway point! To celebrate, lets amp up the difficulty. This week, we ask you to write a short story. To help reignite your imagination, we have provided some fantastic jumping off points.

Pick and choose whatever you want and use it in your brilliant story. Use as many or as few as you want.

1) An expired library card
2) A saloon
3) A Virgin Mary statue
4) A bucket of marbles
5) An abandoned movie theater
6) A red Shoe
7) A morgue
8) A dead fish in a parking lot

No New Posts Week 3: Favorite Words

"Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words" -Robert Frost.

When we read a poem or hear the lyrics to a song, even one simple word can evoke profound emotions. This week, we want you to make a list of all your favorite words- write down as many you wish. Once you are done, take these words and construct your piece. Try to use as many as you can from your list.

No New Posts Week 2: I remember

Now that we have all brushed away the cobwebs, we can dig into week 2.

Write a poem that begins with the last thing you can remember someone saying to you today or yesterday. See if you can use that line two or three times.
